MTA Launches Real-Time Bus Tracking Service Using Algorithms Developed by Prof. Maxemchuk and Collaborators at CCNY

New York City's Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has launched a new service called Bus Time that enables customers to track the location of buses in real time on the Internet, smart phones, and by text message to any cell phone. Over the summer of 2011, seven electrical engineering graduate students from Columbia University and City College under the direction of Profs. Nicholas Maxemchuk (Columbia Electrical Engineering) and Umit
Uyar (CCNY) collaborated with the MTA to develop new algorithms for
accurately tracking bus locations. Their work helped overcome previous problems encountered by GPS-based systems that were caused by signals being blocked by tall buildings.
The new service is currently being operated in the borough of Staten
Island. The MTA will soon begin deployment of Bus Time technology to
bus depots in other boroughs of New York City; the technology will be
fully operational city-wide by the end of 2013.
